How To Start Running From Scratch

Start Your Running Life

Getting started with running can be a discouraging, defeating experience. People often try to go out to quick, doing too much too soon. The end results is usually that the person ends up quitting. Running does not need to be a 1 or 2 week phase that you stop because you get discouraged. You just need to know how to get started.

Getting Started Running

If you are brand new to running, it is important to start off slow, and for short distances. The most effective way is to do easy intervals. Start off by walking for a minute, followed by an easy 1 minute jog. Try to repeat that cycle a few times. If that is too much for you, try to jog for one minute and walk for 2. Find what works for you. While you do not want to push so hard that you are discouraged, it should also not be too easy. You want to feel a little bit of a challenge. Be sure to keep track of how your workout went. You want to remember what your intervals were, and if possible, how far you traveled.

Step 2 is picking it up a notch. As you continue to run, start to increase the jogging portions of your workouts. You may go to a 2 minute job, followed by a 2 minute walk. Eventually, you want to increase the jogging time, without increasing the rest time. Do this in gradual steps. After time, you will find that you can increase your speed, increase how long you can run for, and you will find that you are recovering faster from the running.

To become a good runner, it takes more than running

As you start to run, it is helpful to make it so that running is not your only exercise. This is for a few reasons. First, you do not want to cause any injuries. Going from no running to running too much is a great way to get shin splints, pull a muscle, or cause any number of other injuries. It is helpful to do some light strength training, or find some other activities that will help you get in shape. If you are just getting started running, you may want to run for 3 days, and do a different workout for 2 or 3 days. This will help you get into better shape, and ultimately, help improve your running.
